The Graham & Co.

It has been a while since we visited The Graham & Co. last October and therefore it’s a good time to go back to the lovely 20 room hotel in Phoenicia, a small town in the Catskill region of New York State not far from Woodstock. Inspired by the heritage of the Catskills, The Graham & Co. is a modern take on the classic weekend getaway. Located at the foot of Hunter Mountain close to Phoenicia’s main street, the hotel is the perfect getaway from the city laying at about 2,5 hours by car. The Graham & Co. was founded by Jeff Madalena, owner of clothing store Oak, Jason Gnewikow, a partner and creative director at Athletics, a New York-based design studio and their friends Amanda Bupp and Bianca Barattini. When they noticed that the old Cobblestone Motel in Phoenicia was for sale, they felt it would be the perfect project to combine their love of interiors and travel and in July 2013 they opened The Graham & Co. for business.

The hotel offers its visitors beautiful views on the amazing natural surrounding making any stay a serene experience. The 20 rooms are outfitted with rustic charm made to accommodate the modern urbanite. Amenities include Tivoli radios with iPod docks, kitchenettes in larger rooms, free bike rentals, a pool, fire pit and marvelous nature.

A lot of the elements in the hotel are pieces you might find in one of our homes. We did a lot of local vintage shopping for lighting and accessories. To bring a cohesiveness to the overall look, we designed and custom made all of the beds, benches and tables using reclaimed timber, sort of Judd-inspired with a rustic twist, modernist shapes with unfinished materials.

And moving beyond just lodging; the first of hopefully many events has also already been planned. On the 26th and 27th of July the first annual Phoenicia Flea will be held, featuring artisans from both New York City and the Hudson Valley. Brooklyn band Widows Peak will contribute their wavy sound to the ears of the visitors. Confirmed vendors include: Brooklyn Oyster Party, Fruition Chocolate, Kingston Wine, Andrew Molleur, Wishbone Letterpress, Hudson Made, Small Room Collective, among many others.
