Michaël Verheyden at Graanmarkt 13

Next Friday, one of Belgium’s most exciting contemporary designers, part of this year’s Wallpaper* Magazine Power List, Michaël Verheyden, will find his way from Genk to Antwerpen, where he will open a temporary store in the beautiful concept boutique Graanmarkt 13. One of our favorite stores in Antwerp also houses an excellent restaurant, an apartment for rent and a gallery which for the occasion will also become part of Verheyden’s presence. After Ferry Voorneveld had the honor as a representative of Another Something during the Limblogdesigntour, a month ago, visiting the visionary designer’s studio (soon more on that visit), the temporary Antwerp-based store will underline Verheyden’s unique vision on design once more, perfectly framed within the excellent environment of Graanmarkt 13. The store will house a beautiful selection of interior objects and design furniture, next to newer work of Verheyden – never shown in Belgium before – which will be for sale in the gallery on the first floor.

The work of Michael Verheyden is characterized by the use of archetypal, silent shapes in natural, noble materials. Each creation seduces in an instant but tells a story of sophistication and craftsmanship.

Michaël Verheyden graduated as an industrial designer in 2001 and before starting his own design label, worked together with, among others, another Belgium design master; fashion designer Raf Simons, after which in 2009 the designer expanded the output of his label with home accessories, working closely with his wife Saartje Vereecke. In the recent years Verheyden, together with Vereecke, has worked on commissions for interesting clients like the L’Apogée hotel in Courchevel with India Mahdavi and Joseph Dirand, and they also created the beautiful table accessories for the new Antwerp-based restaurant of three-star Michelin chef Sergio Herman named The Jane. Parallel they have been expanding the collection of the Michaël Verheyden label, which is sold at selected retailers worldwide.

Graanmarkt 13 is a boutique which houses stylish high-end fashion, curious design objects and collectibles. Items that inspire and feel like coming home, carefully selected by Graanmarkt 13 founders Tim and Ilse and famed Antwerp art director Bob Verhelst. The remarkable concept, which next to the store houses an restaurant and gallery, occupies an entire townhouse in the center of Antwerp with the traditional building being reworked by Vincent Van Duysen, one of Belgian’s best architects. In the past years owners Tim and Ilse turned Graanmarkt 13 into a household name, but wisely kept one secret to themselves. The initial idea was also to include a bed & breakfast on the top floors, but plans changed when they saw the plans developing and decided to turn all available space into one luxurious apartment, accomodating up to 6 adults.
