Last year Nike introduced its ambitious and innovative NikeLab to the public. One of the first collections launched via the new platform and chain of select retail outlets were the Holiday 2014 designs of its super impressive collaboration with Jun Takahashi, founder of avant-garde label Undercover. Last week, the two presented their latest joint endeavor with the Holiday 2015 collection. As always the designs show a blend of leading Nike innovation and Takahashi’s creativity and unique sense of individualism. This particular collection was specifically informed by data from the Nike Explore Team Sport Research Lab and inspired by insights from Takahashi’s GIRA (Gyakusou International Running Association) crew, resulting in gear which was designed to layer. The pieces form not just some of the most elegant designs in run wear, but they are just as cutting edge in its pragmatism as aesthetic: providing elegant protection against the elements in the best possible way.
Together, the pieces not only provide weather protection, they also articulate the modern uniform of running.
In our eyes a clear standout in the collection is the Shield Runner Jacket. Lightweight and waterproof, it features a hood with a visor for coverage and underarm vents for breathability. Forming a perfect combination with the Dri-FIT Tights, which feature a gusset for improved mobility, a flat waistband and a zippered pocket with reflective detail for visibility in low-light conditions.
Another favorite of ours is the Aeroloft Vest features 800-fill down to deliver lightweight warmth and laser perforations to provide ventilation. Perfectly enhancing the Long-Sleeve Sweat Map Shirt, which is highly innovatively informed in its design by sweat mapping data from the Nike Explore Team Sport Research Lab.
Finally the collection is incredibly completed with the Gyakusou Free 3.0 Flyknit, adorned with Takahashi’s signature aesthetic: featuring a Flyknit upper and Nike Free 3.0 platform to help enable the runner’s natural motion.
The Holiday 2015 NikeLab x Gyakusou collection is available worldwide now in the NikeLab online store and at select NikeLab stores.
