Rua Stan Getz by André Cepeda

With a short but wonderful stay in beautiful Portugal coming to an end, we present the latest by one of our favorites from the country: Lisbon-based publisher Pierre von Kleist editions. The relatively small publishing house continues to release incredible additions to their highly focussed catalogue, making the company an inspirational example for the practice of publishing in the contemporary climate – releasing only publications of the highest quality, in limited runs. Their latest release is named ‚Rua Stan Getz’ and features the work of Portugese photographer André Cepeda, who released ‘Rien’ with the same publisher three years prior to this one. In the year ‘Rien’ was released, Cepeda spent three intense months in São Paulo, exploring and photographing the city, while reevaluating the very nature of his practice – resulting in this incredible warm series created from an open and sensitive perspective, showing the great talent of the photographer.

The thrill of discovering a new territory, the endless photographic possibilities and the buzz of the city in contrast with Cepeda’s distinctive silent style, reveals the photographer’s work in a completely new light. The result is a warm, colorful labyrinth of this megacity – its places, streets, architecture and people. André Cepeda managed to create his own São Paulo in ‘Rua Stan Getz’, which reads like a sensual dream that feels real.

From Cepeda’s notebook:

Spitting on the ground, pissing in the street, the sound of the saxophone that vibrates and endures and dilutes as I write alone in the studio in São Paulo thinking about the city streets…the decision to turn left or right or to go straight ahead is fascinating and physically demanding. The unexpected and the discovery in every minute that passes; everything is new and the will is strong. I want to be on this endless path, I want the streets to speak to me and teach me how to look and tell me how I should act. it’s the images that guide me and make me see what I want to see and discover what I have never seen…

André Cepeda was born in 1976, and began exhibiting regularly in 1999, the year in which he received a residency grant to work at the Espace Photographique Contretype in Brussels. Since then, he has undertaken several institutional commissions and been an artist in residence, showing his work in many solo and group exhibitions the world over. In 2007, he was shortlisted for the EDP New Artists Prize, in 2010, he was nominated for the BESPhoto Photography Prize and in 2011, he was shortlisted for the Paul Huf Award from the Foam Amsterdam. Publication has been an important aspect of his work. Since 2008, he has run Inc. Livros e edições de autor, a bookshop specializing in art books. He also founded the Blues Photography Studio in 2005 in Oporto, where he produces work for many photographers, institutions and galleries, including printing, scanning and taking photographs. Cepeda is represented in a number of public and private collections.
