Anna et Salomé

We really like the latest publication from Edinburgh-based publisher Lawson’s Books. The book named ‘Anna et Salomé’ holds the thrilling photographs by the very talented Barcelona-based photographer Adrià Cañameras. Born to a French father and a Spanish mother, Adrià initially learned the craft assisting fellow photographer Misha Kominek, after which his own work took off, working both for magazines as for some interesting names in music. The central point of focus of ‘Anna et Salomé’ is the Mediterranean. Developed from a personal project which allowed Cañameras to truly reflect on the environment he grew up around, the images were captured in various locations along the Costa Brava in Spain and on the French island of Corsica. Shot between June 2012 and March 2013 these beautiful and striking photographs function on both an abstract and geological level, and can be viewed as part survey, part celebration and part meditation. We love Cañameras’ exquisite eye for details, both when it comes to the forms as the incredible colors served by beautiful Mother Nature, masterfully captured in his frames. 

In a revealing interview with Disturber some years ago Cañameras states on his work:

My vision of the world is fairly straightforward. It’s based on the things that attract me, the various light that I come across, portraits of my friends, still lifes (that occur naturally), and the life of my family. I don’t like the idea of changing reality very much. My photography is simple and nothing special. It’s very relaxed but I think that’s what makes it special.

Adrià Cañameras was born in 1988 and as stated got involved with photography from an very early age. He states Walter Pfeiffer and Wolfgang Tillmans as two of his main influences, which clearly shows in his own work. Using the beauty and power of natural light, rather then aiming to tweak it, his photographs inhabit a great sense of pureness and honesty, showing its subject, whether it actual humans or just landscapes, in an utmost natural fashion. Over the last few years the work of Cañameras has risen to prominence within the pages of Apartamento Magazine, Dazed & Confused, Rolling Stone, Die Welt and the New York Times, as well as through his frequent work with various musicians such as El Guincho, Delorean, Extraperlo, and one of our favorite producers and DJs around; John Talabot.

My dad’s the one that showed me photography. I’ll never forget one afternoon we were taking a walk, I was 16 and in school everything was going fairly bad for me. The following year I had to choose what I wanted to do and I told him that I wanted to take photos and he said OK, but that I had to take photography as a profession more in the sense of a baker or a construction worker or a plumber. That I couldn’t go around pretending I’m an artist and that if I did I’d become a jerk.

‘Anna et Salomé’ is printed in an edition of 500, the book features a specially commissioned cover art from Scottish artist Michael Docherty.
