The aesthetic life of Michaël Verheyden

Visiting the immaculate world of the Belgian designer

It was a long time coming when, three weeks ago, we finally met one of Belgium’s most exciting contemporary designers, Michaël Verheyden, in his beautiful home on the edge of the industrial city of Genk, in a green area toward neighboring Hasselt. Last year, Verheyden debuted on Wallpaper* Magazine's Power List—underscoring the widespread international recognition of his work. But even before that moment, we were very curious to learn more about his creative vision, basically from the moment we discovered his work at the beginning of 2015. The first appointment we made to meet up was scheduled for March of this year, but time and again, we were forced to reschedule due to various emerging obstacles on both sides. Eventually, we got in the car and made our way to the Belgian province of Limburg on a Friday afternoon at the beginning of June, right after a period of extreme rainfall that caused problems in northern France and different parts of Belgium. Michaël Verheyden at Graanmarkt 13

Next Friday, one of Belgium's most exciting contemporary designers, part of this year's Wallpaper* Magazine Power List, Michaël Verheyden, will find his way from Genk to Antwerpen, where he will open a temporary store in the beautiful concept boutique Graanmarkt 13. One of our favorite stores in Antwerp also houses an excellent restaurant, an apartment for rent and a gallery which for the occasion will also become part of Verheyden's presence. After Ferry Voorneveld had the honor as a representative of Another Something during the Limblogdesigntour, a month ago, visiting the visionary designer's studio (soon more on that visit), the temporary Antwerp-based store will underline Verheyden's unique vision on design once more, perfectly framed within the excellent environment of Graanmarkt 13. The store will house a beautiful selection of interior objects and design furniture, next to newer work of Verheyden - never shown in Belgium before - which will be for sale in the gallery on the first floor. The very talented creative mind creates fashion accessories, home accessories and furniture with a distinct elegant robust aesthetic. Verheyden graduated as an industrial designer in 2001 and before starting his own design label, worked together with, among others, another Belgium design master; fashion designer Raf Simons. The highly influential designer coached Verheyden's graduation project and commissioned him to make a series of leather bags for his Spring/Summer 2003 collection. In the same year as working on the pieces for Simons, Verheyden started his own label focusing on leather bags and accessories, which trained his exquisite eye for detail and dealing with all kinds of different materials.
