Today, h(y)r collective brought a new issue, nr 11, with some great inspiration! I asked Ryan for some background information and received a beautiful story of the idea behind the online magazine and some future plans.
— h(y)r collective was started by a couple friends who weren’t finding what they wanted online, and had the drive to make it happen basically. There wasn’t a really focused publication covering the menswear market like it should be. From new brands and collections like Nom de Guerre, Wings+Horns, Our Legacy, to the Japanese market like Engineered Garments and Visvim, to really classic pieces by Red Wing, Ralph Lauren, Filson etc. There were bits and pieces around but we really felt there was a gap in the market for something special. The content of the magazine and blog has always been exactly what we like. People we want to read interviews with, and products we care about. And we really tried to emulate the layout of a magazine online, but still utilize some of the interactive functionality – that’s a process that will be forever evolving however.
It’s coming up to our 1 year anniversary in May, and although some plans changed along the way, the direction is right on track, and even moving in a more focused, more exciting way. In May we will be opening an online store with some of our favorite brands which will grow about double in size for the fall. We will also be presenting Lot #001 of THE collection by (y). It will offer about 2-4 products a season which we are collaborating with some great heritage brands and new designers to produce our ‘perfect item’.
I think companies like Monocle/Winkreative and Surface2Air have done a great job with utilizing different branches to create a more diverse, interesting work load. They’ve been fairly inspirational in terms of developing a really interesting business that allows you to still do a handful of projects you really love. —
